In 2006 I developed the first real-time newsroom simulator – News City: The Virtual Newsroom – which was configured as a game to be used by trainees to react in real time to developing news stories. The project was taken up by the BBC College of Journalism who provided research funding to develop a range of scenarios. The project later formed the core of the new BBC College of Journalism Website – used to train BBC journalists in service.
Other innovation projects have been been closely tied in to teaching journalism students, and to making the central Westminster News Online (and then Winchester News Online) ever more realistic and ambitious.
